A quick (and windy) trip to the lake

By the time Memorial Day weekend rolls around, I start feeling the itch to go camping.  I think Memorial Day 2007 was the last time that we actually went camping (that was pre-kids!) but I still feel like we should go sometime!

Chad and his crew (Brittanie, Grace, and Kaylie) invited us to go to Lovewell with them...we decided that little kids, a pregnant me, and a tent didn't sound like the most fun way to vacation.  But, since Brent, Rachelle, and Garrett were making the trip from Omaha, we thought we should at least go down for the day.

"The day" turned into "we'd better wait until after Katy wakes up from her nap otherwise she will be a bear" and we didn't get to Lovewell until almost 4:30.

The kids quickly figured out what they wanted to do.

Chad was camped right next to a little rocky cove where the kids could get close to the water.  It was so windy that it was almost unbearable!  Notice the waves in the above picture?

Lane and Katy loved seeing the few (crazy) boats that were out on the water and had fun throwing rocks.  Eventually they put on their swimsuits and had a blast playing in the waves.  I couldn't believe how much Lane enjoyed it!  He is usually the cautious one and doesn't like anything crazy.  But he was out there jumping over the waves and laughing and squealing the whole time!

Supper proved to be a challenge - the wind was still crazy and it was tough to keep our plates from blowing away.  I packed hot dogs, grilled potato packets, cucumber salad, Puff Corn, and pineapple...Chad added chicken legs, baked beans, and corn on the cob....Rachelle brought hamburgers, grapes, strawberries, more pineapple, and berry crisp.  We were all pretty stuffed by the time the food made it to our mouths without blowing away!

Finally the wind died down a *tiny* bit and we could enjoy s'mores.  For some reason, Curtis hates marshmallows, so he ate another hot dog instead.

Lane had fun toasting and eating his marshmallow, and Katy just got to eat 2 untoasted ones.  She still loved it - even when the wind made her hair stick to her face.

By this time it was past the kids' bedtime and we were getting ready to go.  But Lane had to stay to watch Rachelle and Brent set up their tent (he thought the tents were the coolest part!) and Katy entertained herself by being a dinosaur.

We finally left around 9 and got home about 10:20.  Neither kid slept the whole way home.

I do miss camping, but honestly, 5 hours at the lake with the crazy wind and crazy kids is enough for me right now!
